Mayors Support Fund

Small amounts of funding are available to Mayors to progress their projects.   Proposals must come from Mayors to Jan Francis and must support the Taskforce goals.

Projects currently funded:

  • Kaikoura Careers Expo

Research has shown that the earlier young people are exposed to career options the better they are able to prepare themselves and select their future career.  The Expo will enable all youth and adults to have a look at different careers and what qualifications and skills needed to follow that career path.  It has become apparent in the work of the Youth Employment Co-ordinator that many youth in Kaikoura have never had the opportunity to attend such an expo and get Careers advice direct from the providers.

  • Grey District Rock Camp

Rock Camp [a summer camp for teenage contemporary musicians – a first for New Zealand in concept, and perhaps the only summer rock camp ever to focus primarily on professional skills and career development for musicians of that age [14-18yrs] and genre of music.  www.rockcamp.co.nz].   This is the most relevant training for tutors in the country – total absorption at an intense level.   One student has been accepted as a junior mentor and will be given the reins of a band to co-mentor for the week, as well as a teaching position at Auckland School of Rock for 2011 to support her university studies.  Another has started training as a junior mentor in the Greymouth Band Rooms.  The daily workshops include the business of music, managing bands, copyright law, teaching skills and methods and individual music lessons daily.  Every previous student has come back fully inspired and rate it really highly.

  • Taupo Youth Transitions

Establishment of a full time Taupo youth worker and the contract and tracking of 15-19 year olds.   The role will be overseen by a local Steering Group that support other youth issues and initiatives.

  • Rangitaikei Small Business Initiative

A local Initiative to work with small businesses to encourage growth leading to new positions being created.   Firstly working with businesses that are nearly at the stage of taking on a new staff member but just need a bit of help to get there.   Secondly, identifying young people who are ‘work ready’ and matching them to these growing businesses.

The Mayor's role is crucial.   The Taskforce is a success because:

  • We work in partnership
  • We work across sectors
  • We are politically neutral
  • We have built up respect and crediblity
  • Capable team

Completed Projects

The Mayors continue to work to support their communities and take satisfaction in a large number of funded projects.
